5 DAY JOHANNESBURG PRIVATE GAME RESERVE BIRDING SAFARI

Day 1

Your first day is spent at the Safari Club Lodge where you have a chance to relax round the pool or enjoy time identifying the many birds that frequent the beautiful gardens. Large trees, lush vegetation and foliage make for great birding in the Safari Club grounds which are often described as an oasis in the airport precinct.

Day 2

After breakfast you transfer to Mongena Private Game Reserve for the next 3 nights/4 days. Mongena is a 2 hour drive from The Safari Club.

You are transferred from the reception after checking into Little Mongena in an open vehicle. Little Mongena is a 10-tent luxury tented camp on the banks of the Mongena dam.

A welcome drink and a briefing with your professional birding guide gives you time to take in the beauty. of your surroundings.

After a light lunch you will head out in an open vehicle with your guide to start the first  drive of your birding safari, this drive usually extends into the evening and stopping to see the sunset with an ice cold liquid refreshment will give you photographic opportunities of an African sunset as well as the opportunity to watch different species of Nightjars fill the darkening skies.

Dinner is served either round the fire pit or in the restaurant overlooking the dam.
Keep your camera handy.

Day 3

This morning starts very early with coffee or tea and then out on your birding drive  before sunrise.

Some of the first species that we’re likely to encounter as we enter the game reserve include Lilac-breasted Roller, African Wattled Lapwing, Magpie Shrike, Black-winged Kite, Little Swift and White-browed Scrub-Robin. As we enter the Mongena concession, we’ll transfer to our Open Safari Vehicle of an unobstructed view, as the clear Kalahari habitat makes itself prevalent with species such as Southern Pied Babbler, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Burchell’s Starling, Barred Wren-Warbler, Kalahari Scrub-Robin, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Scaly-feathered Weaver, Ashy Tit and Violet-eared Waxbill.

Brunch is served when you return from your bush experience.

This afternoon will take the form of either a birding  drive or a birding walk getting up close to some of the wildlife in the reserve. This is also an ideal time for your guide to explain about trees and scrubs as well as the small 5 and many other bugs and insects that inhabit our safari space.

Dinner is served when you return from your activity.

Day 4

Another early rise preparing for your morning safari activity with your professional birding guide.
We’ll take our time, exploring the Acacia Thronveld thoroughly before moving on to some of the wetland systems within the reserve as the morning heats up. Around the water we’ll be looking for Goliath- and Black Heron, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Half-collared-, Giant- and Pied Kingfisher, African Jacana, White-backed Duck, African Swamphen, Black Crake, African Rail, African Snipe and more.

Brunch is served back at camp giving you time to relax before leaving on an afternoon boat trip on the dam. Viewing game on the shores of the dam from your boat while enjoying a sundowner is a memory that is unlikely to leave you long after you return home.

Day 5

All good things have to end but not before experiencing your last birding drive hopefully focusing on species such as Greater Honeyguide, African Grey-, Southern Yellow-billed- and Southern Red-billed Hornbill, White-browed Sparrow-Weaver, Great Sparrow, Red-headed Finch, Purple Roller, Bennett’s Woodpecker, Flappet Lark, Cape Penduline-Tit, Yellow-throated Bush Sparrow, Double-banded Sandgrouse, Golden-breasted Bunting and loads more.
